[Riding Jezebel] Frame Slider Design and Selection
Posted by: Cableguy - 01-06-2018, 01:22 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - No Replies

Crash protectors, crash bobbins, fairing protectors or frame sliders, all these products ultimately seek to do one thing - protect your expensive bodywork or the essential and often expensive structural parts of your motorcycle from damage in the even of a fall or tip-over. The idea behind these is that during a crash or tip over they take the brunt of the damage, keeping your expensive bike frame away from the pavement. They were originally used by racers, but became a common street-bike aftermarket install to protect fairings.

Digging around it seems people are split on whether or not adding frame sliders to your bike is a good idea. There are times when sliders do help: In driveway tip-overs and low speed crashes, frame sliders can reduce the amount of damage. But even with sliders in place, bars still get bent/broken and bodywork still gets scratched. The downside is if the bike has any momentum and that slider catches on a curb, pothole, dirt, etc... then it can start flipping, doing major damage. On the other hand, the frame slider will create a gap between the pavement and your bike's fairings, so if your leg happens to be trapped in that not-so-awesome place, you'll be grateful to have those solid pucks taking the bike weight off your leg as you skid. If attached incorrectly, the frame slider's mount can shift, causing cracks in the fairing. By the same token, if your bike's stock turn signals protrude outward, they too will crack your fairing when they slide, acting the same way a frame slider would (so get flush mounts!). You need to decide if you think adding sliders to your bike will be beneficial to you. Some bikes have no good installation place for frame sliders and can cause more damage than good (like ending up cutting into the frame, for example, with the FZ6).
Cost:
Cost of the frame sliders must be appropriate to the items that they are designed to protect. Price is not necessarily the best indicator of quality. Poorly designed frame sliders made of the nicest shiniest materials may not serve their purpose as well as well designed but less 'bling' ones. Remember these things need to be able to withstand a great deal of shock on impact with the ground, without transferring that shock to the bike frame.
Mounting Configurations:
The frame slider must be designed to mount securely onto a strong enough part of the motorcycle so that impact forces can be adequately distributed or absorbed. Here are some popular mounting configurations. Fairing Mounted Frame Sliders Sliders that mount onto the fairing with small fairing screws may provide some protection in a minor tip-over but offer very minimal protection in a slide. These sliders are not generally recommended for serious riders. They also often require drilling a hole into the fairing, and are more likely to cause cracks in the event of a fall. Frame Mounted Sliders - Direct The most popular and viable mounting option is directly to a selected strong point of the frame. Sliders with this design offer the most protection and impact force distribution. The installation of this type of slider often require modification of the fairing and in some cases like the Honda VFR800, as extreme as requiring the modification of the coolant bottle. For this reason, many choose the first or the third option as fairing modification can at times be quite intimidating. This option is the most popular for serious sportsriders, amateur and semi-professional racers alike as they provide the best protection for the money. One other thing to consider when choosing these types of sliders is where they will be mounted to. Many models of sportbikes offer several places to mount them, frame slider manufacturers all have their personal reasons for choosing the mounting location for theirs and many of them make that choice for the wrong reasons. An example is cost - a location that offers a two short bolt mounting location is cheaper than one using a long through the engine bolt choice. The former being a much weaker location. If you own an SV650 you will know what that means. Another choice is the use of a bracket so that cutting of the fairing is avoided - see below (Frame Mounted Frame Sliders-Through-Engine Bolts). Frame Mounted Sliders - In-Direct To address some of the concerns owners may have about modification of the fairing, some manufacturers have opted for a design that allows for the slider to mount onto an offset bracket that then mounts onto the frame. This offset introduces a whole new set of variables into the mix. Depending on the degree of the offset, impact forces now include amplified torque stresses which will be applied to the frame mounting points. Offset brackets will need to be of beefier construction, but not so beefy as to stay intact during an impact while severely damaging the frame mounting points. This is often the most costly type of slider configuration as most brackets require ingenious CNC work and design. In some situations employment of a bracket is a calculated risk, in others it is just not feasible. No cut sliders are attractive to most bikers so do your homework and ask the manfacturer questions before you buy them. Frame Mounted Frame Sliders-Through-Engine Bolts The third mounting option found only on certain models of bikes like the Suzuki DL1000 Vstrom, TL1000S, SV650 and Ducati models of bikes allow for use of the long, through-the-engine mounting bolt. This method is by far the strongest available as impact forces are allowed to be distributed over a much larger area. This is also the second more costly design as these long bolts are quite expensive to manufacture. The design must be structurally strong enough not to break off when encountering the various types of impact forces but not so strong that these forces would be transmitted entirely to and damage the considerably more costly frame mounting points. In other words you want to sacrifice your slider before your fairing and then your frame in that order. It's a delicate balance and there is no sure way to ensure that any one design will accomplish this desired goal.
Frame Slider Material:
The choice of material used for the frame slider should be a balance of the following 3 requirements: Abrasion Resistance - the material should be hard enough to be able to slow the bike down in a slide and not be totally worn down to the bolt half way through a slide Structural Strength - the material should be strong but not brittle and snap off too easily on impact Energy Absorption- the material used should have some energy absorbing properties but not be so hard that all impact forces are transmitted to the mounting points or fasteners (solid steel or aluminum materials are examples of non-energy absorbing materials). Most high quality frame sliders today are made of some kind of nylon or other for energy absorption and with aluminum inserts for strengthening of the fastening points. The range of nylon types, with different levels of abrasion resistance and "brittleness" used is also quite varied.
Fasteners and Components:
Quality of materials used, aesthetics and quality of workmanship should also be considered when choosing the right frame slider for your bike. Look for high quality anodized steel bolts. Black non-coated bolts will rust in a week or less depending where you live. Stainless steel washers between your steel bolts and aluminum inserts in the slider also reduce potential corrosion problems. Socket head cap screws offer the smallest footprint allowing for a thicker and stronger slider dimensions and are generally much more expensive then regular hex-head screws. Nyloc lock nuts where applicable are another added safety feature. True, these are all minor considerations in the overall scheme of things but they all add up to the cost of manufacturing. One last thing to remember is to always try to use some form of thread lock compound like Loctite and to properly torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's recommendations. If you're not sure check out our torque reference guide.
CONCLUSION:
Where does that leave you the consumer? Well, we all don't want to think about the day when we will be able to justify the purchase of frame sliders. The reality is that as long as bikes have only two wheels, you can expect them to fall over sooner or later. Frame sliders are one of the surest and least expensive ways to ensure some protection for the expensive or sometimes irreplaceable parts of your bike. After all some protection is still better than none. Think about broken rear brake levers, gear shifters or even worse - punctured radiators or coolant bottles, when you're miles from civilization. The rule is the same no matter what you're spending your money on - buy the best you can afford and don't be afraid to ask the manufacturer why their product is better than the plethora of other brands available out there. Any good manufacturer will be very clear about what differentiates their products form others so that you will be able to make the correct purchase decision. Read reviews and check out what other people riding the same bike as you have installed, why, and how they stood up to a crash. [Riding Jezebel] Tips and Options for Lowering a Motorcycle
Posted by: Cableguy - 01-06-2018, 01:15 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - No Replies

There are several options for lowering your bike so that you can fit more comfortably on it. After sitting on the bike and determining whether or not you need it lowered, here are a few tips and options for what you can do to give yourself a bit more height. From VTwinMama cycle-ergo.com/ is a site that has a selection tool for bike make/model and a stick figure seated. All sorts of adjustment possibilities, including a look at feet to ground. Be sure to read the reliability message in the FAQ section ... but this is a good tool to narrow down your search!

1)

Determine if you're leaning forward or reaching for the handlebar controls. If so, it may be shifting you in your seat and hampering foot to ground reach. Consider adding a pullback riser or checking into a new handlebar.

2)

Check if there is an adjustment to the rear shock(s) and front forks (it's called preload, the point of spring compression, and for lighter weight riders, can be brought down . . . just make sure the springs aren't bottoming out when you encounter bumps in the road).

3)

Buy or modify boots for a higher heel/sole. You'll want to carefully consider how your foot is placed in regard to the footpeg and lever, but remember that the lever can usually be re-adjusted to a different angle if the new configuration shifts your overall foot position. [Riding Jezebel] My Leather Motorcycle Jacket Short List
Posted by: Cableguy - 01-06-2018, 01:05 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - No Replies

Here's the chart I used when deciding what jacket to buy, what features were important to me, and where to buy it from. I looked for the lowest price on fitted leather jacket with CE approved armor. Being that I'm quite curvy (34-25-35) I was looking for a jacket that, on top of being safe, would flatter my figure rather than making me look like a monolithic block. I took some time to consider the features I wanted, and these were at the top of my list:

Leather, Black with white/contrast piping or highlighting for night riding, at least 1mm thick

Removable Liner

CE approved armour in elbow, shoulders and back

Venting

Inside pockets (at least 2)

re-enforced stitching (double or quad) on stress points of high impact

Adjustable waist/hips for tighter fit

Neoprene collar for comfort and fit without stiffness of leather

Zippers at sleeves for tighter fit

Neck loop for hanging the jacket on a coat rack

Reasonable weight/bulk (nothing too heavy or bulky)

<colgroup> <col style="mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 28013; width: 575pt;" width="766"></col> <col style="mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 19273; width: 395pt;" width="527"></col> </colgroup>

Jacket

Feature Rating

Scorpion EXO Women's Elektra Leather Jacket - MotorcycleToyStore

Good balance of safety and style, very adjustible in the waist

$329.99

Spidi RR Ladies Leather Jacket - KneeDraggers

Good balance of safety and style, not adjustable, best safety and comfort features

$589.95

TAP Motorcycle Gear Women's Jacket -

Good balance of safety and style, not adjustable, local

$329.95

Cortech Women's LNX Leather Jacket - Motorcycle Superstore

Good style and safety features lower price nice tapered waist

$215.99

REV'IT! All posts below tagged with [Riding Jezebel] in the subject line originated from a web site (ridingjezebel.com, now offline).

Here's her introduction:

The adventures of a petite girl and her Ninja 250.

My name is Victoria, I'm a petite (5'0", 98lbs) girl and Jezebel is my 2008 Ninja 250. I bought her after completing a motorcycle training course and receiving my learner's motorcycle license in early May 2011. This site is all about the research and modifications I've done to my bike to make her safer, and more comfortable for a petite girl to ride.

[Riding Jezebel] Motorcycle Stock Heights and Weights
Posted by: Cableguy - 01-06-2018, 12:49 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - No Replies

Choosing a bike when you're short can be a mindnumbing task. You need to look at the heights of the seats of the bikes you're interested in, and whether or not they can be lowered easily. Cycle-Ergo is an awesome motorcycle ergonomics simulator. You simply enter your height and select the make and model bike you're interested in, and it will show you the angles and how you will fit on the bike. Below is a list of stock heights and weights of some popular motorcycles. Borrowed from VTwinMama General Notes Organization: by style and then ascending Seat Unladen height Seat Laden: 180 lb rider on the bike Seat Unladen: No rider on the bike (* reflects 1" added to Laden Height as other data not available) Weight: * means dry weight (no fluids in it; add about 25 lbs. for wet weight) NIP: Not In Production Cruisers

Don`t buy the biggest bike you can afford!
Posted by: Bernie PRS Mechanic - 10-08-2017, 11:15 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - No Replies

BIG BIKE, SMALL BIKE, BLACK BIKE, BLUE BIKE.

I’m often asked ‘what bike should I buy?’ There are lots of considerations of course, like the rider’s experience, size, money available, etc. And then there’s what type of bike they like (regardless of whether it makes sense!), and the manufacturers they prefer. In the end, it’s the size that becomes the hardest decision. From meeting so many people through racing, riding, and Pacific Riding School, one of the most common mistakes I see and hear is buying a bike that is simply too big. Or one that becomes too big as your riding, age and needs changes.
One of the worst emails to get is from a former student that has quit riding because they have dropped their bike too many times. Or that they hardly ride because they aren’t comfortable due to the bike being intimidating. Well 100 extra kilograms can do that to you! You shouldn’t get sucked into buying a bigger bike because it’s cool, because your friends have them, or you just figure (or hope) that you’ll grow into it eventually. It’s simply a bad idea.
It’s true that all bikes weigh nothing while you’re moving in a straight line. That changes fast when you lose your footing on some sand, have to stop quickly, or encounter awkward corners that require quick changes in direction. Smaller bikes are easier to flick around. Twins or singles are great fun in the turns. Most 650 twins have more than enough power to take you where you want to go at highway speed. In fact, the dual sports can go anywhere, and have an added bonus of keeping your driving licence clean ;-)
When I tried the Suzuki VStrom a few years ago, I took out the 650 first, and then the 1000. Of course the 1000cc power was nice on big highway hills, but I also found myself speeding unintentionally. In the turns, the back roads, the 650 was the better bike by far. And guess where I try and do most of my riding? Small roads, fire roads, twisty roads. I believe any vehicle you buy should represent the bulk of your riding. Unless you’re rich and can have 3 bikes and 4 cars, you need to purchase for your 90-95% usage. I like lots of different bikes, but I selected the one that satisfied the biggest list of requirements.
Do I wish my bike had more power? Occasionally I do, I won’t lie. But my insurance is cheap, my licence is clean, and I really enjoy riding the bike. It might not be the greatest bike ever, but I’m not sure what bike that is anyway ;-) I find the bike effortless, and it does everything well, and that’s what I ask of it most of all. After 30 years of riding, and a little racing, my regular ride is a Suzuki VStrom 650.
It’s great to see manufacturers bringing back smaller bikes, but ones that are also cool! Almost all of them have a 300cc and 500cc bike that looks good, handles and stops well, and is reasonably competent on the highway. For the gifted, the experienced, there is an awesome selection of 650cc motorcycles to fit almost any needs. Don’t be afraid to start with a smaller bike, or trade down in size, you might be trading up in enjoyment!

 Don`t be afraid to downsize!
Posted by: Bernie PRS Mechanic - 07-15-2017, 10:53 PM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - No Replies

Don’t be afraid to downsize!!

We all know that size can matter. Well, to a lot of people anyway! I never had that problem when it came to motorcycles. I found smaller bikes more fun to ride, and more fun to race. As well, being an idiot disguised as an adult, big bikes and big power always had the potential to put me in my own harm’s way. Sad but true, the right wrist isn’t always connected to the brain as much as it should be.

Another factor that can change things is a shift in you’re riding territory/age/physical abilities. I think your motorcycle should represent most of your riding, not a once a year trip. As well, depending upon your bike, riding style or natural abilities, that 750cc bike that was so easy 12 years ago is not the same bike to you today! You adjust for many things in life, and your favorite ride shouldn’t be excluded. Heavy becomes heavier.
Stop!! Some of you bought bikes that were too big in the first place! Instead of giving up, dropping the bike enough to give up (or ICBC tells you to give up!), or just avoiding riding due to lack of confidence, switch gears by switching bikes. A 600cc sport bike seemed like a good idea at the time (or bad advice), but a 500 twin would have been so much more fun in the real world. And more comfortable in stop-and-go traffic. Easier, cheaper, bigger smiles……..

You probably know it well, but let’s refresh ;-) A smaller bike is usually cheaper to own. Insurance is cheaper if nothing else. Tires are generally cheaper. Tune-ups as well. They are easier to handle, especially when things go sideways. Better still, they are much easier to flick around, in and out, toss around, etc. Lighter bikes generally brake easier. Let’s tie that into the fact that as time goes by, your licence gets more important as time goes by. And let’s face it, all the reasons why small easy-to-ride bikes were the hot ticket to good times when you started apply the same way as your skills slow down a bit with grace and age. Okay, I’m still waiting for the grace ;-)

My current favorite bikes are the new crop of 500 and 650 twins. After 35 years of riding, my 650 VStrom will be all I need to have a great day of riding tomorrow!

Cheers, smiles for miles.

Bike Ergonomics / Riding position of different bikes

Interesting web site to show riding positions of various motorcycles.

Best way is still to sit on the bike yourself to see how your body sits and how comfortable everything feels.
